Note: Palazzo Brera has origins as a 12th century church and monastery. Major architectural renovations and developments occured in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Accademia di Brera, or Brera Academy, was established as an art school in 1776. The scenography department, known in Italian as the Scuola di Scenografia, is one of many departments, including decorative and graphic arts, painting and sculpture.
